All:
I think this was the best of the five Walk Back in Time events that I have attended. The WWII portion grew steadily with about 80 participants. We had Reenactors from 35th ID, 14th Armored, 2nd Rangers, 12th Army Group WACs, 3rd ID, 1st SSF, 6th British Airborne, 84th ID, 38th Jagers, 10th SS Frundsberg, 3rd SS, 352nd ID and 416th Rifles. It was also great to see Greg Lee, VP of the WWIIHRS in attendance on Saturday.
I got an email from Dana Keller, the Director of the Audrain county Historical Society on Wednesday that said “I lead a charmed life, we won’t have any rain.” The forecast was abysmal for the weekend…rain, and on Friday high winds, thunderstorms etc. Dana must live a charmed life because despite the state of MO having strong storms over the weekend, we dodged all of it. Our inclimate weather consisted of 10 minutes of light rain at 730am on Saturday, and 30 minutes of misting on Sunday morning around 8am , and then it cleared.
This year, we added a WWI and Korean War displays, and continued with the Spanish American display. The Korean War display attracted much attention with the South Koreans visiting the event, and veterans. We also were situated with the cowboy camp, who built and brought a collapsible saloon, which several of the WWII section managd to find after dark. For vehicles we had 3 jeeps, a US motorcycle sidecar, a CCKW and two half tracks. The Germans had a 75mm infantry gun. We did have one authenticity issue with too long of hair, but the individual agreed to have his hair cut, and he received a field expedient hair cut. There were no safety issues that I am aware of in the Saturday and Sunday Battles.
Overall the event was very well attended this year, with the estimated attendance well over 10,000 like always. We received more space than ever and were able to fill it. The Historical Society came through again with their free Saturday night food, and Sunday morning muffins as always. They also went through the camps giving out free catfish from the Friday night dinner. The candlelight tours also went as planned, and was well attended. The mail call was very popular, with the letters being written to the Reenactors by name from an 8th grade history class, with some of them being creative and entertaining.
A highlight for the weekend was the attendance of Emmett Lang, H Company, 334th IR, 84th ID, who drove from Johnstown , PA to attend the event. Emmett was able to talk with most of the Reenactors, and spent Friday and Saturday nights in the camp sites getting to know people, and sharing his experiences.
Overall, I felt this was the best Walk Back in Time yet, and another quality HRS event. We are still able to expand the participation amongst the WWII section and are looking for quality living historians to participate in the event for next year. We strive to make this the best living history timeline in the Midwest , and hope to expand the event even more in the future. The event is held the 3rd weekend of September, so please mark your calendars now to attend next year.
