Tovarischi,
Well folks another Eastern front event has taken place at the Indianola, IA site and it was a grand time. A big thanks to all those who attended the event and we hope all of you had a good time.
The weather was almost perfect for an Eastern front event with approximately 4 inches of snow on the ground with some light snow falling on and off during the day. Temperatures hovered in the 20’s with an overcast sky. The creek crossing was not completely frozen over but was not overwhelmed by high waters either. Unfortunately, some nearby storms had an impact on numbers but that is to be expected for this time of year.
Normally the event has between 80 to 90 participants but due to weather concerns it this years number totaled 45. We had participanst from all over the Mid-west including Michigan, Minnesota, Illinois, Kansas. The Soviet / Partisan forces outnumbered the Germans nearly 2 to 1 but the Germans didn’t seem to mind and neither did the Red Horde. LOL.
The first scenario found the Partisan forces being stripped of their weapons and ammo and being placed under German control as a forced labor detail. The Partisans took lumber and tools supplied to them and they were to install mock telephone poles and then string them with twine to simulate the phone wire. The Germans were the overseers and the Red Army was to try to free the work party without getting them killed.
That scenario was followed by one where the Germans were to construct obstacles out of surrounding materials to slow the advance of the Red Army. The Red Army and partisans were to find and destroy these obstacles.
For lunch a wonderful period meal of fried spam and hot potato soup was served up to the hard fighting forces of both sides. It was well received by the troops.
The afternoon scenario was a classic one which involved the smaller German force defending a hilltop bunker and trench system against the Red Army and Partisan forces.
Again my thanks to all who came out to the event and braved the elements because it is you who makes he event happen.
Hope to see you next year!
