I just got back from the January Mariongrad. I have to say folks, if you missed this one, you missed a good one. I personally think this is the best one I've ever been to, and I heard other long time attendees say this was the best one in years.
It wasn't because of numbers, (we had approx. 20 RKKA troops and approx. 30 Heer/W-SS/LwFD & FJ) but more so to the quality of the people, the quality of the leadership (thank you Don King and Duane Rose & Brian Meier!), along with a great site combined with cold weather and snow.
While there were a few instances of down-time, the day was filled with probing, and several attacks on the RKKA trenches by the Axis forces. The highlight for me was when all of the RKKA troops were forming to probe, and then assault the Axis trenches when one of their patrols caught us just outside of our trenches. All RKKA troops dove into the trenches and ran to firing positions as the Germans attacked at close range. After a few shouted oaths in Russian the entire body rose up as one for an impromtu Oooraaahhhh! charge, which drove the Germans to the ground.
A highlight for me was spending the night in the RKKA trenches as the snow fell, and learning to play Durak. What a Soviet experience, playing cards on a plasch, by the light of a torch, and having to brush the snow off of the hand you are holding!
I extend my personal thanks to all who attended. Everyone of you added something to this event, and I don't think I exaggerate when I say that this is probably the most fun I've had reenacting since coming back to WWII two and a half years ago.
