Comrades, How far in from the end of the M43 shoulder board does one sew Yefreitor stripes? I've got lots of illustrations, but I don't believe I have seen a specific measurement. I could, of course, eyeball it, but would rather do it according to regs, and I have to assume that the RKKA, like all armies before and since, has one. Spaceba!

Take the length of the pogorni from the bottom edge of the button hole, to the bottom of the board, and divide that distance in half. That is the center of the (working area) of the board. All stripes are centered on that point, unless your SOP requires you to wear branch insignia.
Branch insignia are positioned 25% up the "working area", from the bottom edge of the board, and rank is then centered in the remaining space.

Spaceba! Funny, other illustrations I have show it off-center towards the buttonhole. Hmmmm.

Spaceba! Funny, other illustrations I have show it off-center towards the buttonhole. Hmmmm. Warren Tovarisch Yuri, that is correct, IF you wear branch insignia below your rank. Most branches, other than infantry, wore branch insignia, regardless of rank, once the soldat passed "basic training", and became a full fledged member of the unit. It seems that after 1941, Infantry dispensed with this, largely because of the volume of troops in Infantry regiments, and the short life expectancy. There are also indications that some of the other "Large" combat arms branches, such as artillery, and armor, also cut back on the use of branch insignia by junior enlisted, simply because of the logistics of producing, and supplying them all. I can not say for sure, but the pogorni that you have pictures of, may have been "factory" produced, and as such were set up to accommodate the branch insignia. I have an original set of Infantry boards, that were worn by a Starshi Serzhant, but he was attached to the mortar section, so has artillery branch insignia on his. The basis for my measurements is the book, Uniforms of the Red Army, as produced by the British Ministry of War in 1944. Boridin

Comrade Sgt., Thanks for the source! I was basing my observation on illustrated tables rather than photos, and these do not have branch insignia on them. To be honest, I don't recall any photos in my books that clearly show yefreitor shoulder boards on a frontovik. Not saying that the photos aren't out there, I just can't recall seeing any in my sources.
