Tovarischi,
Well it was another great weekend despite the liquid sunshine falling from the sky. LOL! Now compared to JB the rain at Lowell was nothing so it did not bother me in the slightest.
I want to thank the 95th Rifles for being such gracious hosts and making my family feel welcome.
My daughter Rebecca and myself and Chaz arrived Friday evening about 6:00 PM. Chaz helped us set up and then we headed over to Slooshy's house for a cookout and swapping of stories. Slooshy house is only a few miles from the site and so it is easy to get to.
Slooshy, Mrs. Slooshy and the family made all of us feel right at home and it was a night filled with good food, friendship crazy stories. My deepest thanks for their hospitality. Plus we watched Kelly's Heroes. The possibility of storms made for the easy decision for Rebecca and I to stay at Slooshy's for the night and head back in the morning.
Saturday morning found us looking at a beautiful day and a full plate of things to see and do. So Rebecca and I returned to the Soviet camp and Chaz linked up with SLooshy and the rest of the 106ers.
Rebecca and I squared away our tent and camp and prepared for the S & A formation. The 95th does a bang up job of getting their folks into formation and using both English and Russian give commands that would make any Frontovik proud. We were the first on the line for inspection and that says a lot in itself. REbecca made me proud with it being her first S & A formation. She handled it like a veteran.
The rest of the day found us messing around in camp and then going out the take photos of our allies in the 106th fight the Fascist foes. We wandered around the site looking at the other camps and vendors to see what might catch out eye. The highlight of the day was the visit of an actual Soviet WWII Veteran to our camp. It was an honor to shake his hand. I believe he was a commander of a sub-gun unit. It was great!!!
The Soviet camp was choked full of really neat items for the public to see and touch. All sorts of weaponry, tent arrangements, field phones, radios, period music. It made for one heck of a display.
Late in the afternoon Rebecca and I set about preparing our supper which was borscht. Boy did it turn out good. Rebecca did an awesome job of helping prepare the various parts of the meal. We had plenty left over and so we shared with our comrades in the 95th.
Saturday night found Rebecca and I changed int our better clothes and attending the wonderful USO swing dance and mixer. It was a great time. Lots of neat uniforms and wonderful dresses. The mucical chairs game was great fun to watch a little American gal use her booty to bump a very large German off of the chair. I think we should call it the "battle of the butt."It was a great victory for the Allies. LOL!
Around 8:00 PM my lovely wife Karen and my other daughter Lorena arrived on site and so we all went back to the USO dance and then went to the TIKI bar down in the American camp. It was great!!!!! They had the American field kitchen popped popcorn and there were all sorts of beverages on hand for a small donation. They also had a large screen and projector set up playing vintage movies and 3 stooges films. It was awesome.
Sunday morning was rainy but not too rainy and so we set about cooking breakfast and then cleaning up and hauling out some of the non essential items from the camp so Karen and the girls could head for home earlier than me. The public came out to see our merry band and they got their moneys worth when they came to the Soviet camp.
Since the China Marines pulled out and left the Japanese troops high and dry the Soviets stepped up to the plate and did a skirmish to re-create the end of the war fighting known as "Operation August Storm" where the Soviets declared war and rushed into Manchuria right after the A bombs were dropped. The Soviets were victorious of course. LOL!
Just as in past years a local warbird pilot would fly his Avenger torpedo bomber over the battle to add to the noise. Wow! He always seems to be so low!!! It is so awesome!!! I will have to admit that it was interesting to see Frontoviks jump up and down and howl like monkeys and chimps as the Avenger torpedo bomber screamed over our heads at tree top level. The only thing missing was the flinging of poo. Truly a sight to behold.
Soon it was time to finish loading out and head for home. The drive home was uneventful but long.
All in all it was a great time and I look forward to more cooperative efforts between the various RKKA units in the region.
Again my thanks to the 95th Rifles for being so kind and being a lot of fun to serve with and to see they are doing a good job of portraying RKKA. Oh...thanks for the rifle crate too!
God bless and keep all of you safe. See you at the next event.!!!!
Sincerely,
Dima
