Tovarischi,
I was wondering if it was possible to convert an SKS to resemble an SVT 40. Also would this process be worth it or would one better off simply buying a SVT 40? Does anyone know what all you would need to do?

Well, I've seen it done to make Gew 43s. So I presume you could make an SVT40 as well.

Oddly enough there is someone out there doing that and selling them. Not sure how it is done... but they are a bit shorter than the real thing I seem to remember. But I think they are adapted to shoot their normal 762x39 cartridges although they look like they have a svt size magazine.
Someone on one of the other forums posted a link to gunbroker.com or some other gun auction site that had the sks-svt conversions for sale as well as a hk - mp44 conversions as well.

I am not familiar with this conversion, but I find it difficult to believe it would be safe to fire live ammo, unless it has a replacement barrel. At that point, I see the cost of the conversion raising quickly.

I'll dig out the link from my email and post it.
I think I remember the conversion had some kind of specialized mag insert that allowed it to fire its standard AK-SKS type ammo, and was not upconverted to fire Mosin-Nagant type ammo. I concur with the Otryada Serzhant that such a conversion to a larger ammo would be a bad idea without lotsa work.... chamber pressures alone would make such a firearm dangerous to operate I think... kinda like those Carcanos that were converted to 8mm Mauser.
Personally I would try to find a decent SVT before buying a conversion if at all possible. The SVT is even longer than a standard Mosin, so an SVT conversion would come up way short even if it worked properly.... unless the SVT also came in a carbine length weapon... if it did, someone chime in with such info as I am not aware of such a conversion during the GPW, nor whether or not it was fielded in any significant quantity.

This is funny, I have seen this rifle before in person. I know the creator of this rifle personally. She is part of our unit actually. Small world. She wants $550 for it. At least that's the price it was when I last saw it.

Tovarischi;
I know Katya, and she is an amazing gunsmith. She has done work for the 25th, and does a great job! To the best of my knowledge, there was never a carbine version of the SVT. While real/original ones are a bit salty, they are still available. Frankly, they run in the same general price range as M-1 Garands, so they are not outrageous. If Katya did this conversion, I would trust it to be both safe, and operate correctly. With that having been said, it is clearly way to short to be taken seriously as an SVT, but it could be a cool toy to play with, just not to re-enact with, but that is my opinion, but only on this weapon. Not on Katya's skills, or abilities to work metal into fine weapons, and equipment for the Red Armies cause against the fascist vermin!

Tovarischi, {BLUSH!} Spaciba bolshoi for the kudos, and pravda, I am happily married (for a decade April 2010). Altho I'd like to, I can't honestly take credit for the SKS-SVT40 carbine conversion. (We are calling it a "Tokinov" Tokarev + Simonov -- get it?) Chris Slater actually built the one I currently have for sale, and it is in 7.62x39 NOT 7.62x54r. It was built for reenacting -- specifically to take advantage of cheap 7.62x39 blank prices (at the time). Actually according to "Weapons 1; A Pictorial Survey of Russian Small Arms" by Roger Marsh, copyright 1951 (no ISBN), there were actually around 2000 carbine-length SVT40's purpose-built during the GPW. It's relatively straightforward and a fairly easy home workshop conversion (welder + sheet metal skill needed), if anyone is interested in doing one, I can walk you thru the steps and have several SVT40 Barrel extensions and metal handguard sets for sale to help you on your way... IMHO, I think it is a neat curiosity, and a couple in the field would be kinda neat, but don't believe they're something worth reproducing in any number....

Spacebas to Sasha for the link to Komrade Katya's site, and Spacebas to Katya for this fine material support of our hobby. Does the PPsh listed there have a blank adapter with it and if not, what would you recommend? I am also assuming it is in standard socialist caliber 7.63 x 25mm? My katyusha has calmed down, sadly I will have to wait to find another sturdy shock-worker woman to make some little red army men! LOL! The good female proletariats always get snatched up quickly it seems! Oh well, best I put on my scout suit and go out foraging again. It is a soldiers fate to forage for his needs. Sad to be a socialist single Volodymyr ... (guffaw, snicker, chortle)
