Anyone here play one? Or sing? Or dance?
Its been said that every Russian soldat played an instrument, danced, or sang. I personally want to learn balalaika. But I wonder, does anyone else here reenact this part of daily life in the GPW?

I have played stringed and brass instruments in the past and hope to get a Balaliaka or Domra at some point to thrash on at events once the potatoe juice flows so I can sing bawdy soldier songs! LOL!

My son, Vladimir, used to take piano lessons. I've told him that an accordion/squeezbox might not be too much of a leap to learn after that. He wants to do it, but would like to try it out first before making such a large investment.

Smart. These things cost a lot! But an accordion makes a great addition. If your son chooses to pursue it, I recommend looking on ebay for old accordions. I've seen a few that look suitable.

So what kind of instruments might be in an authentic ad hoc RKKA or Ukrainain military trench group? I am thinking the Baililika, a harmonica, a squeezebox (accordian), maybe a fiddle... anything else?

Mandolin? Small drum? Guitar?
And of course good old fashioned Soviet whistling.

Punctuated by the rhythmic uses of body noises? lotsa that I fathom, between the potato juice and borsht I think there would have been plenty of soyuz fuel for that! LOL!
Do Russkis and other eastern peoples skat sing? and then of course someone will have to learn that knee popping dance they do! I do seem to remember one character in "The Hot Snow" who tries to seranade a female medic by singing whilst accompanying himself with a guitar.

Yes, I recall that scene as well.
I don't think they do skat there, but whistling is HUGE there.

I wonder if they have whistle songs like "Don't Worry, be Happy" but in Russian or course, or do they just like to whistle familiar melodies... or do they have whistling choirs? people that whistle in harmony?
