Tovarischi;
I have been looking at getting a motorcycle to haul our Troop commander around in from time to time. I was looking at the Dnepr's that come out of Ohio, but have begun to hear of many problems with both the bikes, and the seller/builder.
I know that the Urals are not really correct, as the models available are too modern, and I have not heard good things about the Chinese bikes.
Sooooo, any other options out there?

Those would work as they are really M72's of a sort, the Russian clone of the R-71 built on contract with the sidevalve engine... basically a soviet R-71 BMW. It does not have a driven sidecar wheel unless heavily modified.
I also checked out the RKKA engines site, and there was a lend lease Harley v twin that they married to the Stieb clone sidecar, the H-D WLA-42, and there was also a BSA M-20 that was a light scout/dispatch bike. The WLA-42 could pull a sidecar around just fine. I think someone out there is making a kind of repro of that out there... check Walneck's Vintage Cycle Trader magazine... might be able to find a vintage WLA too. The Stieb sidecars are still being make I think, and old ones can be had here and there, plus I have connections over in China that could probabaly ship a sidecar here if you can't find one here.
Matt Quantico ( I think that is his name) runs a vintage military vehicle place in NJ that sells parts to the Chinese cj750 R-71 clones, so he might have the sidecars too still in stock. He was at the Odessa West Front Tactical one year with a Horch field car one year.

I am really not impressed with the Chinese bikes. Every one that I have had any dealings with has been junk.
Thanks for the other info though.
BTW: Velodya, if we get a bike with sidecar, as the OMs house mouse, you will be his driver. You do realize that, don't you?

I've been thinking more and more about this, and I'm thinking that one of these might make a good vehicle for me. Depending on my school policies and state of finances, I might buy one. Maybe in a year...

Komrade Velodya,
do you have a moto-bike license yet? if not, get a starter bike first, learn that, and then relearn how to drive a sidecar bike... sidecar bikes have some unique handling characteristics you have to master to operate safetly and effectively, they are great fun, but without proper training one can get into trouble easily. The sidecar makes left and right turns very different in execution, and having the sidecar loaded or unloaded also changes the turning abilities and characteristics. A worthy skill to master to be sure, but an extra level above riding a regular moto-bike.

I might just detach the side car and learn on the Ural, a college student can't spend too much cash on vehicles! Definitely I really want to learn to do this! Who the hell am I kidding? I have no money, no income, and no means of getting anything. I should give up on this right now, but I can't tear myself away from the idea of it. I'm pulled along away from where my mind wants to go, and I can't control it. Its driving me crazy.

We all see toys we want, then try to A: Figure out ways to pay for them, and B: Try to figure out ways to justify what we wanted. Fun times had by all. Boridin

You know, sometimes just having the dream of what you want to do reenacting/living history-wise is cathartic/worhtwhile. I know back when I quit in the late 90's, and no longer got to dream about it, it really changed me for the worse. Now that I'm back in amongst my reenacting brethren again, I feel much better. I can recall years ago having a good time just listing what I would need for a certain impression, what it might cost, what I could do to acquire it, and how much fun I could have with it. Just that in and of itself was kind of neat.
