I will agree that the telogrika is more utilitarian, and is the better place to start, but you do eventually want the shinel, if you can find it. Just remember that Cavalry units were authorized to modify the standard shinel design to use buttons, because the hook, and eye system did not stay closed when riding the mount at the trot/canter.
