Comrades, I have a new recruit who is built rather square, he's going to need a size 44 overcoat. Aside from Alexy at Front of Russia, I know of no one making repros, and I figure the odds of finding a surplus one is almost nil. Anyone have any ideas on a source for manly-men sized overcoats?

Occasionally Sportsman's Guide has them, I see them on E-Gay from time, to time. Trident has them from time, to time, but other than that, I have no clue.
The other option is to go with a set of telogrika.

Sr. Sgt., I am thinking that might be the only way: ebay, or a want ad. He may just have to bite the bullet and buy a telogreika. I did want him to have the overcoat though to serve as a blanket. Thanks for replying.

You can always carry, and use the grey blanket too. It was not generally issued to rifle units, as they were in short supply.
Another option is to pick up one of the WH, or SS blankets sold by a couple of the German sutlers, and use it as "liberated" material. Being cold at night sucks, I don't care what age you are.

True, and I for one, after having to be cold when he didn't want to be cold a long time ago, is a real comfort0vik now. Stavka-Stitch may have to just get over it. I'm encouraging Sasha as much as possible. I like getting young people involved in this. They've got to carry the torch for us here soon. Yuri

Well, my age is starting to show, as I don't sleep on the ground any longer either.
I now sleep on a litter. As evening approaches, I just go take two from the medics (and since I am the first Sgt, they don't argue), one for me, and one for the OM. The medics have long figured out that they need to bring at least six litters to every event, as they know I will take two, they want one each for themselves, and if we have any wounded, they get to sleep on a litter as well.

In all my ACW experience in California, I've slept on the ground outside half the time, and on the floor of the supply tent the other half. 100% of the time I've done picket duty. I guess I'm still young, unlike you old fossils

In all of my 16+ years of doing ACW in the SE U.S. I have slept under canvas maybe six times. All the rest of the time was out in the open in temps ranging from the teens (with one blanket too) to 100+. That's not counting my field time during those years with the Al and KY ARNG. Hardly any of that was under canvas. I figure I've paid my dues, and Sr. Sgt. Boridin has more than paid his. We may be old fossils, but we are craftier and meaner than you. Yuri (We also get better auto insurance rates.)

I guess when it comes to sleep wear I am the king of farbes, then! LOL! I always sleep in a tent on a liberated cot, with enough blankets for a fireteam! LOL! and if its bad enough, a lend-lease bag under the blankets, hidden from view! Hey, no one reenacts a sleeping soldat for the public, so I too become a comfortovik! I used to sleep in the winter in Germany with USAREUR with just a bag, a blanket...and a poncho head to toe with another soldat to stay warm... on the frozen ground in a hole ...and I can't say it was really sleep, more like shivering rest with my eyes closed in the dark.
Those days are over for me. My days paying dues are over. I don't have to learn what suffering was like... I suffered! LOL! Glad I did it, but glad I am not doing it now!
Personally I would go with a telogeika and a blanket... more versatle combo to have in my book, depending of course on your unit SOP... the demands of your specific impression.
Vlad.

OK, smart Hawkeyes Suck!, guess who has an extra tour of KP? Old fossil my assets! Boridin lol Have tovarisch Vsahdneek send me to the kitchen gulag? Oh, you are so there on Friday sonny! Do you have that Cpl Vsahdneek, here is your Friday KP. Now, back to shinels. I have not seen the enlisted in awhile, but I keep seeing the dress ones on E-Bay. I sent an e-mail to my friend who lives there, and asked him to keep his eyes open for the field grade ones. He says, they may get pretty scarce because they are no longer produced, as the Russian Army, and other CIS Armies use a field jacket similar to the one used in the west. The dress shinel is still used for dress, parade, and dining in/out occasions, but not for field use. Point being, if you see any, you may want to scoop them up! Boridin

Fair enough starshi sarzhent, I can pull myself away from my paperwork and do battle with the fascist potatoes and dishes.
When winter approaches, should I try to find a shinel or telogrieka?

lol. Fair enough starshi sarzhent, I can pull myself away from my paperwork and do battle with the fascist potatoes and dishes. When winter approaches, should I try to find a shinel or telogrika? Yes! Now you are going to ask me which one, right? Answer! Both!! Each serves a purpose, and depending on the situation, each is better than the other for one purpose, but not for another. I tend to wear my shinel for cold weather duties such as guard, KMD, or such, but I wear the telogrika in the field. If the telogrika gets dirty it is much easier to clean. The REMFs have these amazing machines that you put the dirty clothing into, and add soap powder, and the machine adds water, and washes the clothing. All you need do then is dry them, and POOF, you have a clean uniform. However, if you put a wool item, like your shinel in this machine, it is not so good. Oh, it gets clean, but then your midget brother is the only trooper who can wear it! I try to avoid using clothing in the field that is not easily cleaned once returning to contonement. Remember you are a Cavalryman, and must look good at all times! Even in death we must look, act, and be better than common rifles! Sr. Sgt. Vladimir I. Boridin 25th Ukrainian Mounted Rifle Regiment Bravo Troop By far the best Red Army Cav Troops in North America!
