Comrades, My primary activity in doing RKKA is attending the three events my unit, 19GMB, put on at Marion, KY. However, I would really like to attend an event or two outside of that venue, but am somewhat limited as to the distance I can travel, especially during the school year. While I would not rule out going to a tactical, I do get enough trigger time to satisfy myself at Marion. I am also thinking of my son, who is only 15 right now, and cannot go to most events armed. Could some of you give me an idea of any Eastern Front events or Soviet-friendly living history events in the Indiana, Illinois, Missouri area? I'm looking at a distance of 5-9 hours from the Fort Campbell, KY area. Spaciba in advance.

Historyfest (http://historyfest2009.eventbrite.com/) might be a bit of a haul for you; it's in Auburn, IN. My unit speaks highly of this event. This is a max-effort event for us, so we'll have quite a few 95th RD guys & gals; so you won't be the "lone commie." The event is in conjunction with the museum, and its supposed to be pretty cool. So even though your son can't carry a rifle, it could still be a cool experience (He can always be a medic)...Another event you may want to hit next year is the Stalingrad event at Fort Benjamin Harrison (IN). Though it bears absolutely no resemblance to S-grad, it's a combination tactical/LH. They had the nicest public crowds I've ever met; I never went near the tactical, preferring to talk to the spectators the whole time. The event is under the Indiana DNR; those folks are good people... Respectfully, Matt

Thanks Matt, I'll think about the Auburn event for next year. Some of our folks went up for the Stalingrad event this year, and really enjoyed it. I would love to do it next year, but it is right up against an event (Lafe, it's Romans vs. Barbarians, full contact* ) that my son and I want to do in Arkansas. The Auburn event sounds like a winner. Thanks! Yuri *This is truly and awesome event, all reports from friends of mine have had nothing but good things to say about it. Just a plug for those who think that period may interest them.

Wel,l actually, our group(s) do stage gladiatorial fights for the public, full contact, using a padded system known as needlefelt. (You find out then just how much of a weapon your shield truly is in addition to your gladius/sword/trident/etc.) If struck, you will have a welt like a rugburn, but no broken bones, blood, etc. Lafe utilizes the same system in addition to spears/javelins with the ends padded and arrows done the same way, but fired in volleys much as we do mortars at WWII events. Like I said, I haven't been to Lafe yet, but in listening to it from those that have been, it's a blast!

Very cool. Not my cup of tea. but cool.
I might be up for a Roman Legionnaire impression someday though. In the meantime, RKKA will keep me busy enough.

Velodya, My experience doing Roman is very limited, but I have to say, after doing CW from '81-'97, with some WWII thrown in during the 80's, that doing Roman is a WAY different experience. Way different. Cool though. Kinda felt weird to be doing some living history with a weapon that was not a firearm.
