Komrades, In pricing live ammo versus blanks, it is getting more expensive to get blanks than live ammo. My (very possibly dumb) question is this: if I had access to some reloading equipment, would it be possible for me to pull the projectiles, and then crimp the brass cartridge? Would the powder that is contained in a live round be appropriate for a blank? Spaciba for the advice, your time, etc.

Tovarisch Yuri;
First off, most factory (reasonably priced) 7.62 x 54 is in steel cases, not brass. Most reloading dies are not designed for dealing with steel cases. Using common dies on steel cases will wear them out very quickly, and will void any warranty from the manufacturer.
If you have brass cased 7.62 x 54 it is almost certainly U.S. produced, and that means it is most likely boxer, not berdan primed. If that is the case, the brass is worth more as re-loadable "live" brass, than it is as once, and done blank cases.
The propellant used in live rifle ammo is a slow burning rifle powder. It works great for live ball ammo, but is not adequate for blanks. For blanks, generally, you want to use very fast burning pistol (small grain) propellants so it burns completely before the gases vent out of the crimped nose of the case.
The noise you get is the result of the explosion of the gases as they exit the case, not as they expand in the bore of your weapon. As a matter of fact, the gases cool in the bore of your weapon, and so the sonic boom exiting from the bore of your rifle is reduced by the cooling effect of the length of the bore. to better understand this principal, read any scientific treatise on the sonic properties of suppressors (silencers).
Point being, you want a very fast burning propellant, that is completely burned, (or almost completely burned) inside the cartridge case, before it expands, and ruptures the crimp.
I do quite a bit of reloading, including my own blanks.

Boridin, Thanks, I had completely forgotten about the cases being steel. I knew that, but did not think about it before I posted. The powder contained is an issue as well, as you pointed out. Oh well, it was just an idea.
