Streltsi!
here's a tip I just discovered for getting cosmoline out of red army mess kits... I just got one from a ebay shop out of the Ukraine and it was totally coated on the inside with a heavy layer of cosmoline... not something I would want to eat out of!!! LOL!!!
1st wipe off the exterior to ensure nothing drips, then put it in the regular oven at about 250 for about 5 - 10 minutes, checking periodically (the 2 parts must be separated and openings upwards) and the stuff will liquify and then you can turn off the oven, reach in with oven mits, and take each part out and pour the grease into the can or jar we all keep in the fridge for discardable fat/grease...
sure beats the heck out of trying to get it all out with goo gone, goof off, a rag, and elbow grease... and even if you have a little left, its not much, and easier to get off as long as you wipe it off when it is still in a warm liquid state... then you can just stick it in the dishwasher for the final cleaning.

New search...
does anyone know if the RKKA used bugle calls or had revellie or taps of other bugel songs to mark formations, times of the day, attack, retreat, etc... of was it just whistles and bullhorns for the RKKA?

Yes bugles were used, especially in mounted Regiments. I just can't find any of the calls anywhere.

Gas canisters...
Mikael of the 3rd Rifles at Odessa this year showed me a gas canister that is oval and not round and he said it was more like the ones used during the war and that the round ones were post war... is that so? I ordered one off ebay from a dealer in Hawaii just to be safe. Its the same greenish-brown OD type color as the other ones.

Vlad V. This is an awful lot of work for cleaning out cosmoline. I just boil some water, then melt the junk off with the boiling water being poured over the item. As to a mess tin, or something, after you have cleaned off the worst of the cosmoline with the boiling water, just wash it by hand in the sink, with dish detergent, and it should be good to go.
