I know this has been discussed before, but I can't find them using the search function. I know that Germans used captured weapons, seen pics, read about them, Vz24, polish 98s, Mas 36, etc. Here are some questions; 1. Were 91/30s used for ost troops on the western front as most of the ost troops were used in static divisions that used captured gear and guns anyway or just on the eastern front? 2. I have read that Germans modified PU scopes and mounts to put on 98 rifles, but did they ever just use 91/30 sniper rifles? 3. I have read that 1 in 4 "German" troops on the western front were some sort of Ost troop, is this true? 4. I read a book about US airborne troops in Normandy and the author kept talking about running into Jap troops, could this have been ost troops of Asian descent? Thanks; Christian

Tovarisch, I cannot comment on German use of captured weapons since that is out of my area. However, I may be able to shed some light on the the incident regarding asian soldiers at Normandy. One of the Recon Cav units (I think 4th Cav But I will do some digging) captured some of these fellows and were going to shoot them as Japs but one the of the Cav officers recognized that they were not Jap but more likely Chinese or Korean and prevented the execution. An artillery barrage hit them and sadly some of the Asians were killed during the barrage as well as the officer getting wounded. There may have been far more of these fellows on the Western Wall than any has realized. This is a link discussing it as well. www.geocities.com/alvinlee_81/WarPicsChinese.htmlwww.ww2incolor.com/?g2_itemId=263forum.axishistory.com/viewtopic.php?f=51&t=82819Hope this helps. 6th SS Gebirg Division used some captured soviet sniper rifles I have been told by reenactors that portray that division... I think they were in Finland and retreated through Norway and then into Denmark and they to the western front... or at least that is what I was told.
Also, the Germans were happy to have the eastern troops, but did not trust them too much, and used them in the Balkans and as occupation troops in France, which caused them some morale problems, as they wanted to fight Stalin and wanted to be closer to their homeland.

It is my understanding that a kompanie of the 709th was armed with 91/30s but havent been able to confirm this. I have seen information where the Volkssturm was issued and used capured MN, many at Fortress Breslau.
I have also read comment where the predominent issue "foreign" weapon within the Wehrmacht was the Carcano rifle and carbine. Also the Beretta M38 SMG with it's 9mm para round was quite popular.

Many of the YBB (Ukrainian Legion) units still carried their former Soviet weapons. They were sent to the front to face the Western Allies. One of the U.S. beaches on D-Day was defended by YBB troops, not Germans (Sorry, don't remember which one)

Some of the ROA troops of General Vlasov, esp the Ukrainian Schuma/SS may have used RKKA weapons while serving the Reich. I even saw a pic of a RKKA Maxim on the western front !

Bit of a necro post I know but this caught my eye. I know a guy who used to reenact 835 Ostbattalion and this is his post in a similar discussion elsewhere...
