Tovarischi,
It must be remembered that pistols are an item which have had and continue to have an appeal to nearly all soldiers throughout the history of the pistols existence.
Another thing to remember is that when the bullets start flying such things as regulations and T.O. & E become very low on the priority list of a soldier. If you think not then just ask some WWII combat veterans. Lord knows I have.
I have multiple first hand accounts of enlisted RKKA personnel carrying(openly and hidden) and using various types of pistols (Soviet, German, Belgium). Not to mention the use of other captured weapons such as the MP40, MG34 & 42, Etc. I will let others wrestle with the issue of what is "common, average" or "the norm."
Such information can be found in various publications such as "800 Days on the Eastern Front", "Memories of War(multi volume set)", "Notes of a Sniper" and the list goes on......
Those who have done any amount of serious research on RKKA snipers will be able to point out one of the most famous snipers and the multiple weapons he carried including a pistol. Can anyone guess who it was? Nope, not Ludmilla.....I said "he."
"Z" is a hint and and it ain't for Zorro. LOL!
Soldiers will be soldiers regardless of the army or time period they served. If they see something they want they will get it.
Speculation can be useful if no other options are available but it should not be the first choice.
Nothing beats honest research. It is a wonderful thing and everyone should try it every now and again. LOL!
Hope this helps.
Sincerely,
Dima
