Tovarischi,
Well there are two period photos of what many of us believe are rain capes which have had camo applied to them. One is of a plasch with a complicated pattern and one is of the splotch pattern. There is a modern color photo of another plasch which is also a complicated pattern but I am not sure as to its provenance.

However, upon further examination I do not think that the photo of the splotch pattern ones are actually plasches. I think that they may actually be camo gowns.
I ran across an article on a Soviet website where they discuss and have period photos of the camo gowns which have the splotch pattern. They are the same pattern as the winter camo gowns used by the RKKA in earlier periods.
The shape of the hoods, appearance of sleeves and generally how the items hang on the soldiers makes me think they are gowns. Who knows for sure.
Now since the RKKA was very big into Maskirovka I will not say that troops did not make field modifications to their plasches such as applying splotch camo to plasches. RKKA encouraged troops to use their creativity to get the job done. As an experiment I applied splotch camo to one of my plasches to see if it would make a difference. Well it does and so I could see troops taking such steps to aid their efforts.
However, until more information surfaces on such things I too would suggest sticking with the solid color plasches especially considering the prices of the camo ones vs. solid colors.
Hope this helps.
Sincerely,
Dima
