This event was a somewhat generic Western Front "Westwall" scenario which was enlivened with the use of a point system that used both casualties and objectives to determine which side would "win."
Numbers favored the Axis 2-1 over the Allies, 40-17.
Units present:
Americans
82nd Airborne
30th Infantry Div., 120th Rgt.
35th Infantry Div., MP Plt.
1st Infantry Div.
Partisan
Axis
116th PG
3rd SS
9th SS
18th Luftwaffe Field Div.
Italian Alpani Mountain unit
Volkstrum
Volksgrenadiers
21st Infantry Div., 24th Rgt.
Weapons: The Americans had 1 full-auto Thompson, lots of Garands and carbines, and a few Springfields. The Germans had 2 MG-34s, several MP-40s, a scoped G-43, and lots of K98s and plenty of ammo.
The first scenario had the Axis forces holding a large fortified (with MG nests and a bunker) hilltop. The Americans had to initially set off smoke canisters and then assault the hill. Even with the addition of the 116th PG as OSS agents, the American forces never got beyond the base of the hill.
The second scenario had the US infantry and MPs holding the hilltop, while the Airborne were sent on a separate mission to disrupt the Axis advance. The Germans main objective was to take the hill. It took subterfuge by a "surrendering" German to break the American right, but the German attack fizzled out just prior to the scenario time frame end.
The third and final scenario had the Axis holding a second pillbox that overlooked a large flat area (that had land mines in front of it!) and the American forces had to take it while also holding on to the hilltop from the previous scenarios. The American commander decided to put almost all his forces into the attack on the left flank of the German position while holding the hilltop with a scratch force.
But even with the help of a Jedburgh agent in German uniform showing a trail around the Germans left flank, the Americans were unable to successfully take the German pillbox and to add insult to injury, the German commander launched a counterattack that retook the hilltop.
This was an excellent planned out and conceived event. Don Johnson and his crew constructed German pillboxes, MG nests, land mines, signs and a number of other items to give the area an atmosphere. Efficient registration added to the well-run event. There were two vendors present: Wephaus and CCYDNE.
Event rating: 9.3 (only drawback - not enough Allied forces)
BTW - the Germans won.
