Tovarischi,
Well another Eastern Front winter event at Indianola has come and gone and it was a great time.
Our deepest thanks to all those who braved the cold(20’s), ice and a little snow to attend this event. Your efforts and cooperation is appreciated more than you will ever know. We bill this as a winter Eastern Front event and so far the weather has not let us down. LOL! Truly not an event for the faint of heart.
We had approximately 50 participants representing Soviet, German and Partisan forces. Those who attended came from Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan and Minnesota.
This event is different from others due to the fact that we have civilian / partisan forces in the field which may or may not be enemy combatants. Thus soldiers are not in a free fire zone and have to interact with this unknown variable. Identification papers can be requested, searches conducted, mock torture and all of the other fun filled activities of dealing with the local population.
We started off with scenarios which required German forces to advance into the area to take control of two bunkers and a bridgehead in order to set demolition simulators and destroy these assets before the Soviet and Partisan forces could capture them. As an additional detail a fellow was placed in one of the bunkers who was portraying Heinrich (Heinz ) Hitler. Fortunately for Heinz the German forces made it to him first but sadly I received reports that he was killed later before reaching his own lines. Thus the time line was preserved. The German forces were able to destroy all of the assets before the Soviets or Partisans could secure them.
Following this the troops were run through a village pacification scenario combined with a lost courier scenario running simultaneously. The Germans were required to advance and capture a village and after securing it forcibly remove the occupants (balloons) and transport them to their rear area to be shipped back to Germany for slave labor. The Soviets and partisans were to advance and capture the village and liberate the occupants and safely return them to Soviet lines. Sadly the Occupants as well as one of the live partisans ended up going back to the Fatherland as slave labor. The lost German courier did such a good job of hiding that neither the Soviets, Partisans nor his own German forces ever found him. LOL!
Our plans to have a field kitchen provide lunch went awry when the snow and ice went north and hit hard where the owner lives. So we went with plan “B” and opened the second front and served fried Spam to the forces in the field. Needless to say my squad tent now has the wonderful odors of cooked Spam permeating from the fabric. LOL!
The last scenarios run for the day had several objectives for each side. German forces were required to assemble full scale wire entanglements of various designs and establish a minefield utilizing 6 full size mock ups of Teller A.T. mines. Additionally, the German forces were required to maintain garrisons at two bunkers, a bridgehead and patrol phone lines running between each to keep them from being cut by Partisan forces that were already in the area. Partisan forces were to gather recon on the minefield location, cut phone lines and generally harass the German forces until regular Soviet forces arrived on the field. The Germans were able to maintain control over all of the obstacles as well as the bunkers and minefield. The partisans were somewhat successful in keeping the Germans busy as well as cutting some of the phone lines.
I had a Soviet paratrooper as well as a German encirclement / escape scenario yet to employ but we ran out of time. Those will be saved for next time. LOL!
A big thanks to those who put together partisan kits and did a great job of adding another aspect to the battlefield that is sorely missing at other Eastern front events.
Again my thanks to all who helped ready the site (Dave Ruffcorn, Oscar Kolbinger, James Olsen, and Dave Pasbrig). My thanks to John Krohn for the awesome demo charge sims and A.T. mine mock ups!!!! They rock!!!!
I am looking forward to next year to see what else we can do to challenge your skills.
Sincerely
Dima
