Comrades of the Motherland!
Does anyone think that the movie soon to be released- "Defiance" will boost interest in The Red Army and of the Partisans of the Great Patriotic War?
This could be the "Band of Brothers" movie for the Eastern Front.

I've been looking forward to it for some time now. The very first event I went to I didn't have enough gear to do a good impression. So I went partisan and had a good time. I ran with the 343rd for the event and that has inspired me to move my Russian impression up on the list.
But also doing the partisan has made me think more about what the "common" man went through during that time. I'm trying to get a few more people involved in doing a partisan impression that would cover all of Europe and start trying to bring them out to events.
Is there already book out for this?

Tovarischi,
I for one am really looking forward to seeing how Hollywood did on this one. It does have the potential to spark more interest in the eastern front.
The story of the partisan movement on the Eastern front has been overlooked by the mainstream and perhaps this movie will help put a light on it.
I have been digging through volumes of information on eastern front partisans and so much of what the supposed movers and shakers of the hobby have stated about it is so off base.
I am pretty proud of my partisan kit and I have used it a couple of times so far and I hope to use it more as opportunities arise. My hope is that we get more folks who take the time to do the research and assemble some good partisan kits. It will add so much to the hobby.
If the movie was done well then we will all have a very good movie to see. The story of the brothers and their organization of the partisan movement in their area is one heck of a good story.
Unfortunately in the re-enacting community the persona of a partisan is one which very few in the hobby know much about and as a result they fear it.
Sadly the biggest obstacle to the eastern front partisan in re-enacting impression will be the uneducated big wigs of the hobby. LOL!
Sincerely,
Dima (one who likes a good movie)

I agree.
Al tho no one called my partisan farby, I didn't hear anyone complain or even raise a fuss. But it is true that more partisans fought than are given credit. Just about every country on both sides had the last ditch effort put forth by the common man.

Well Dima, reaching back to my memories of doing WWII reenacting back in the 80's (I've only recently come back folks), the big bug-a-bear with doing partisan is back then it tended to be where folks who could not play by the rules in a regular military unit would congregate. Therefore doing partisan got a bad rap (deserved at the time) as a place for farby misfits. I have thought that I would like to do and Eastern Europe/Ukrainian/etc. or Italian partisan impression sooner or later myself. It would be a nice excuse for me to get a 98K. Yuri Stakhanov 19 GMB

Great movie. I bought it when it came out, after seeing it in the theater twice.
Unfortunately Defiance got the Hollywood snub. It was amazing, accurate, well-done, and they hated it.

Just saw it,
disappointing, not enough of a techno-how to kinda movie on partisan activity...
too much emotional baggage re/ the infighting between the bros and the animosity between combatants too much drama, not enough 'how to' stuff... no telling where or how they scrounged for what they got and the degree to which they interacted with the other red army partisans...
Germans were treated like Keystone cops like in old hollywierd movies...
too much like Fiddler on the Roof but with gunfire and bloodshed.
No Sir, I didn't like it.
By the time the Stukas hit their camp I was saying to myself "Spaceba Hitlerites! snuff out all this bad acting and verklept b*llsh*t!!!!" LOL!
The thought of a former smuggler riding a white horse and then giving impassioned speeches was sorta out of place... and then he shoots the horse for din din instead of TRADING IT FOR FOOD... what a moron. What did he need a horse for anyway?
There was no planning in any of the raids... no training except a little rifle practice, just a mob action against trained Germans who acted like they had just been handed rifles before the action started and then fell all over themselves, totally unrealistic.
Like I said, little realism, too much inane emotionalism and drama, no how-to primer on partisan warfare here. In reality, the Germans were constantly using large units to sweep the rear areas, often with armor as well and decimating the partisans... this was not shown... instead if you believed this movie, the partisans were on par with the German police, SS, and military.... bunk... too much like a prolonged camping vacation if you believe this... not representative of partisan activity I believe.
Too much like a diary movie... and they admitted in the credits it was very much a 'dramatized' version of events... I wonder what would have happened if they had stuck more to the book, and used history to fill in the blanks instead of cheap hollywierd emotionalism.
I had to watch a couple GWAR videos just to get the bad taste out of my cinema palate. Thanks GWAR! what would I do without ya!
I'll give em one point for the clothes, uniforms, weapons, vehicles, and the fact they filmed it in Lithuania to give it a 'realsitic' feeling. At least they didn't cheap out on that stuff. And the fact they actually had Schuma Security troops doing some of the hunting. But that is as generous as I will be with this one. It could have been so much more.

Got to admit, its good for Hollywood though. And of course "based off a true story" should never actually be construed to mean an accurate depiction of said story.

For sure, for a hollow-woodrow flikk it was okay, didn't mean to sound too harsh, but I expected more of the brass tacks of partisan activity, so it left me a bit empty... too much drama, not enough how-to... about all I learned that I did not already know was that they used the word Otriad or Otryad to describe their partisan bands.
As for GWAR.... LOL!!! they are a comedy heavy metal band that has the most bizarre stage show in the world... they have been doing tours, cd's and albums for about 20 years I think, and all where outrageous costumes on stage that make them all look like they came out of a World of Warcraft game piece catalogue.
Do a youtube or google search for their videos.... and make sure your digestion is completely normal!!! You will be either laughing your butt off or find them absolutely disgusting... no one walks away apathetic!
I watch them to purge other bad emotions ... very cathartic!

Yeah, that one was special! Propaganda at its finest! LOL! I esp like the scene where the Partisan leader tells the village elders to burn the village to the ground, but oh yes, the villagers will have to supply the partisans from time to time with supplies... How?
And the doctor with the monicle that sucks bllod out of kids for the wounded German troops, until they die. Incredible.
And Americans were supposed to buy into this. Amazing. It never ceases to amaze me how dumb hollow-wierd thinks we must be.
