Hello Everyone, This is my first post and greetings to all! Did the Russians ever paint camo patterns on their helmets? I have seen a couple of original types with two color paint patterns. I'm not talking about white washed helmets, but have seen some done in a fashion like the Amoeba pattern. Thanks, CD

Tovarisch CD,
Welcome to the forum!!!
I do not recall seeing any camo painted Soviet helmets other than whitewashed ones for winter.
I have seen a few splotch pattern cloth helmet covers but only a handful.
Now does that mean it wasn't done? Heck no! A lot of things were done in combat which are not in any manual of the period.
So it is posible that Soviet helmets were painted with camo but at present I have no examples to support it.
Helmet netting seems to be just as elusive in the RKKA as a helmet with camo paint.
Please keep us poste on wha tyou find.
Sincerely,
Dima

Tovarischi,
After looking at a lot of photos from the early fighting between the Japanese and the Soviets in the 1930's. I have noticed several photos of cloth camo helmet covers and nets.
the cloth camo helmet covers appear to be the splotch (aka amoeba) pattern.
The nets mostly appear to be ones made in the field out of twine.
Sincerely,
Dima (I love history)

I have seen a piece of burlap used, held in place with a section of inner tube.
I have only seen, one, or two pictures of this, but that is an option as well.

Tovarisch,
Is there any way you can lay your hands on that photo to get a digital copy to post.
Or can you direct me to where I can find the photo?
It would be a good resource to have posted for documented options for RKKA troops.
Sincerely,
Dima

I saw it several years ago, and sorry, but can't remember where it was. I wish I did. It might have been in a U.S. Army museum, as that is where I saw a lot of neat pictures, that I have not been able to find elsewhere.

Tovarisch, Bummer! I will do some digging and see if I can find some of the camo / netted helmet pics I have in my collection. I will post them on groups.yahoo.com/group/Dimasarchive/I seem to remember a pic from ebay where a German soldier was using a cloth helmet cover with the Russian splotch(Ameoba) pattern. I will post it too if I can find it. Sincerely, Dima
