Any recommendations on reading material on the GPW Soviet Grunt? I have a basic knowledge of the Russian Front but am looking into learning a lot more. My main interest is the Infantry, their tactics, gear and uniforms. Thanks.

Any recommendations on reading material on the GPW Soviet Grunt? I have a basic knowledge of the Russian Front but am looking into learning a lot more. My main interest is the Infantry, their tactics, gear and uniforms. Thanks. 'Tis an exciting time. With the fall of the USSR so much new information has come out, and much more waits to be released. Not sure exactly what you are interested in, but here are some books that you might enjoy if you haven't read them already. Stumbling Colossus - The Red Army on the Eve of World War By David Glantz Colossus Reborn - The Red Army at War, 1941-1943 By David Glantz There is a third book in Glantz's series that he is working on will cover the Red Army from 1943-1945. These books are great for the scope of depth on the subject and a fresh understanding of the Red Army as an organization. Stalin's Reluctant Soldiers - A Social History of the Red Army, 1925-1941 By Roger R Reese This book should be required reading for anyone that wants to reenact Red Army. It covers everything from training, to officers, to shelter, to food issues. On a side note, I am not one to get butterflies when speaking in public, any size of crowd, but back in January I had to address an assembly where Professor Reese was in the audience. Talk about nervous. Awesome Book. These next two are very recent memiors that have come out. I always prize the soldiers memiors. Those are the best. Tank Rider - Into the Reich with the Red Army - By Evgeni Bessonov Excellent book that even includes my all time favourite cigar reference in relation to WWII. Red Road from Stalingrad - Recollections of a Soviet Infantryman - By Mansur Abdulin That one is a regular infantrymans perspective on the war. Also very good. There are so many books I have on my shelf I can recommend. Beevor, Erickson, Craig, on and on. But those 5 I listed are good and if you haven't read them I think you and other folks insterested in the subject will like them. Hope that helps. -dave 416th

I'd like to recommend "Ivan's War - Life and Death in te Red Army, 1939-45" by Catherine Merridale. It's a new publication in 2006.

Comrades,
I don't have all that many Soviet books yet, but anything by David Glantz is GREAT! I have "Kursk", and "Zhukov's Greatest Defeat" on the Battle of Rhezev. Both excellent books.

Does anyone have any info on the proper placement of badges and medals on soviet uniforms. I have found reference works for $100 and $450, but I would like to not have to spend that kind of money for a simple question.
Any help woujld be appreciated,
Phillip

Phillip,
I saw a reference somewhere, but forget where it was. It was a book, not online. Probably one of those reference books you mentioned.
However, best rule of thumb. Look at the pictures of the vets, see how they wore theirs, and emulate that. Pictures are easy to find and all over the web.
Hope that helps.

I just picked up a copy of "Stalin's War" by Laslo Bekesi. It's the third book in his series on Soviet uniforms, and for our purposes the best of the three. It contains some great period pictures. The recreated pictures and text feature the same inexplicable mistakes and ommissions that characterized his first two books. For example, his insistence that the padded jacket with the standing collar came first, and the jacket with the folding collar was introduced later? This defies all logic and period phoyographic evidence and just leaves me scratching my head! Basically a good book, though for the period pictures and nice close-ups of equipment.

If you only can have two Tank Rider and Red road from Stalingrad are the ones you want, for the soldiers point of view. mosinjohn

Tovarischi,
I recommend getting the series by David Glantz titled:
Memories of War: The Experiences of Red Army Veterans of the Great Patriotic War.
They are interviews with various RKKA veterans.
The information in the interviews blows away a lot of the nonsense the so called experts of our hobby spew out on other forums.
Sincerely,
Dima
