I hope I will be able to find some help here How can I tell what is the size of Ssh-36 helmet? I acquired shell that was partially restored and I would like to confirm its size. I was told it was size 3. Eventually, I would like to finish restoration of this helmet. I’m aiming for period September/October 1939. Which type of liner would be most correct for that period, the leather one, as offered by Prairie Leather or the later canvas style? If the later model is correct does anyone reproduce it?

Prairie Flower is working on the later style also, he is just a bit overwhelmed, so be a bit patient.
As to which style of liner you use, that is up to you. I have one of each, but find the early "leather" style more comfortable, but that is just me.
The reason for the change, was that the cotton stitching used to sew the leather liner into the headband would rot from the sweat, and the helmet would become non-op.
The correct color for the shell is a very dark, almost black green, but there is some evidence that this was changed sometimes, when the liner was replaced, but not every time.
How to determine what size it is, well, put it on your head. How much room is left inside the shell, between your head, and the shell? What size hat do you normally wear? give me that info, and I can probably tell you.

Give me a day or two to get all that info. I think I will be able to post some pics as well. Thanks!

Tovarischi;
Just picked up another size 3 shell (really good price, too!), so now I will be doing the restorations on another one!
