Comrades, Were the canteen covers that one sees with a shoulder strap intended exclusively for the glass canteens, or were these to be used with any canteen regardless of material? Also, is this an item the belongs exlusively to any particular period of the GPW? (Early only? Mid-war and later? Late war only?) I have no idea, and appreciate your help on this. Spaceba!

Hello, I know this is in response to an older posting but I have an answer: The canteen cover in question is originally an older Czarist pattern that is known as the "1907" pattern and was issued before and during WW1(along many other variations of carriers & covers). The pattern of carrier/cover may have existed before 1907(and most likely in a white canvas) but I am not sure. Typically they were issued out early on once shortages became obvious and, hence the use of glass made canteens. Glass canteens were not exclusively used with the older cover, though. This style of carrier/cover really could be used throughout the war but is USUALLY seen in the first half of the war. In short, if you have a carrier with the shoulder strap, you can use an aluminum canteen with it and is surely correct. Also, you can even have "liberated" German canteen (without its wool covering, if you want). Hope it helps. Eric

Comrade, The Medical Orderly also carried a shoulder strapped Water Bottle in addition to their own.
