Torvarischi,
Does anyone know of a decent source for large sized ushankas? I'm in need of one and hate to buy one that is incorrect. I have yet to find period ones in my size which is around a size 60cm.

Try Alex at FOR. He hooked me up with a hat for my huge head.

I got mine from Trident (I am a 61) and for my units impression (Ukr Cav) it is accurate... they have a variety at Trident... just make sure you know which one is accurate for your impression before ordering. For example, I was told by our senior nco that the black fur ones were for officers only.

For example, I was told by our senior NCO that the black fur ones were for officers only. Volodymyr IIRC the real animal fur is for Officers only, enlisted wore what was called "Fish Fur", which is a synthetic fur. That is to say, it is not animal fur. One of the methods of producing this "synthetic" fur, was by combing hemp, into a small tufted patch, which was drawn through a canvas, or heavy fabric backing to form the fur appearance. The Germans captured some of these ushankas, and were so impressed by the method, that they copied it, and began to produce an ushanka like hat for the German military for Soviet front service, by the same means. Back to fur, as I understand it, black is Navy, and certain party officials. Grey, white, and brown/tan is Army, and Air Force. Needless to say, during the GPW this "rule" may have been somewhat relaxed, but, at least that seems to have been the policy. for what it was worth. Trident does offer a good range of what look to me to be proper style ushankas, but he has been having problems with his suppliers, as some of them seem to have decided to go into business selling their products directly, rather than through agents. I have been unable to get the ushanka that Volodymyr is referring too above in over a year, at least in my size. Boridin
