True enough comrade Sgt.! However, the down side is that we cannot wear it properly as a blanket roll. Yuri S. Hence the reason you just roll up a blanket for that visual purpose. Besides, most troops just carried their shinel (if it was still serviceable) in the platoon wagon, along with the goulash kannon. Boridin

Nyet. In our little group I want to be able to wear it correctly as a blanket roll. That's just me.

Well, then take a more modern shinel, and use it as a pattern. go to your local fabric store, and find the closest wool to what you want, and make a shinel of the thinner fabric, and then you will have what you want.

Ahhh Comrade, but I have no one to sew for me anymore. Yuri S. Tovarisch; Are your fingers all broken? Like any good soldier, sew for yourself! I do almost all of my own sewing, including on sewing machines. I repair my troop tents, repair saddles, saddle bags, map cases, Cavalryman's valise's, etc, etc. It is good experience for every soldier to make running repairs, and "internal economy" for his equipment. Very true comrade sgt., but some of us have talents in some areas, and not others. That is not one I have, nor do I have the time.

It seems I am very talented lately at being misunderstood and upsetting people. My attempts at sewing in the past have led to a lot of frustration on my part and blue clouds of language about the dacha. Yuri S.

My mom started teaching me to sew, when I was a cub scout, and the Army just re-enforced the need to be able to do it myself. So I have been at it for many years. Boridin
