Komrades, My son and I have been assigned numbers for the purposes of marking our field gear, clothing, etc. from our unit. Now my question is this: in what spots or areas on our equipment do we do this? Or, is there any protocol to this at all? We would like to do it right the first time. I guess using a machinery white paint marking pen would be the easiest method. Any/all suggestions and advice are appreciated. Thanks!

Tovarisch Stakhanov;
I am unaware of any set policy on such individual markings per Red Army doctrine. I suspect that no such policy was ever issued, as the Soviets would have considered all issued equipment "State Property", and not a personal belonging, so there would have been no need (in the minds of state planners) to create such a policy.
That having been said, all the gear we have is personal, or unit property, so your unit may/should have a directive.
I would also recommend using black markings, as they are less conspicuous than white, unless of course, you are using it on snow camo gear.
Another thing to consider is, if your markings are in English (non-Cyrillic) you want them to be in a less conspicuous location, such as the inside of the meshok, or on the inside/back of the canteen cover. Just as examples.

Comrade, My markings will be in cyrillic, with appropriate numbers. A friend of mine has a late -war messtin that is unit/number marked in white paint. I was going to follow his example. I will just mark them in inconspicuous places, I was sure whether there was a guideline or not. Thanks for the help and heads up! Yuri
