I am a big collector of 'exploitation' films, and many were made originally by people who thought they were doing 'important serious work'... but did such a bad job at it and overacted to the point that their work is now seen as schlock.... this movie wasn't THAT bad, but it does have its schlocky moments as we have discussed... Just think William Shatner's overacting in Star Trek, sometimes he is good, and sometimes he is Jeff Carey mimicking him in the dolphin tank in "Ace Ventura Pet Detective"... The more people want to be taken seriously, the more they make me laugh... The fact the director and producer did not chose to hire any Russian actors to do any of the heavy lifting in this movie or use them to fact check the history tells me alot about the agenda of this film. I prefer Russian films describing those years. If you want to watch a real over the top farce re/ those years, watch "The North Star" starring Dana Andrews... it was made in WW2 by Hollywierd to sell America on the idea of us helping our soviet comrades defeat Germany... pure schlocky propagandized bs from stem to stern! To the point of farcical comedy...

One more error in Enemy at the Gates: Notice how they played the Hymn of the USSR? It wasn't adopted until 1944. In 1941 they still used the Internationale.

Just got a movie from Belle and Blade when they were at the Geneseo Airshow, It's called "The Admiral" and it is about a Czarist Admiral and his career from his command of a minesweeper in WW1 up until his capture during the Russian Civil War as he lead a large number of the White Russian Forces. It is very well done with a number of sea and land battle scenes. Also some romance for the lady Russkis out there. A well done period peace, esp if you like the WW1- Civil War study.

Tovarischi,
My personal favorite is the begining of "Ballad of a Soldier" when the frontovik is being chased by the German tank. It almost has that Keystone Cop feeling to it.
Ahhhh.....Guns, Soap, tank chase and a beautiful Russian girl. What more could you ask for in a movie. LOL!
Sincerely,
Dima

Soap as in soap opera or as in a frontovik discovers soap!? LOL!
anywho, just got a IHF film calle "The Red Army"... seems to ba an allied puff piece on their Red allies in 1939... not too long, but does have some very good and clear footage of the RKKA in training and on parade, with a variety of weaponry and with uniforms in good repair... plus footage of workers and soldiers in various training bases.... also started watching "Quiet flows the Don"... nice chicks and alot of scenes of Cossacks on horseback, including a scene of them chasing down Austrian Infantry in the open in ww1. Kinda slow but a good view of Cossack culture.

Just got Russia's War: Blood on the Snow
10 part documentary on the Stalinist era and ww2, very well done, not always balanced perspectively, the narrator on some discs tosses off comments without any documentation and occasssionally they use the same footage more than once and mislabel it, but overall very informative and well produced. One of the better expose' s on the terror and crime that was Stalinism and the inferno that was the GPW-Ostfront.

Where did you get it from Volodymyr? I want to say I saw it on TV very late at night back in the 80's, if it is the same one I'm thinking of.

I purchased "Russia's War: Blood upon the Snow" from PBS.com. That series has some incredible footage. Also, the veterans interviews are awesome. I'm not sure when it came out; my copy has the copyright dates of 1995 & 2009.

I got my copy off Amazon.com ...
the interviews with the old soldats RE a great part of this series, indeed, Matt, they really put you right there ... some very harrowing stories. These survivors are TOUGH !!! 'Dolph totally underestimated their tenacity and their capacity to roll with the punches, and jump right back into the fray, fists flying and arms swinging.
The one quality they and Stalinism had that cut both ways I thought was that they had a blank faith in their offensive capacity, so on the one hand they fearlessly threw themselves into battle, and not only when there was a blocking force behind them, but on the other hand their character and communism's lack of care for human life meant they often went to the front like lemmings, and also died like lemmings, en masse and without much deliberation or analysis of their tactical, operational, or strategic position. The east often laments the fact that they lost 25 million people, soldats and civilians during the GPW, but to some extent that can be blamed on their own scorched earth policy and Stalins habit of throwing units at the enemy relentlessly and often with no concern for any tactics that would have reduced the body count on his side.
This series definitely demonstrates the essentially criminal and paranoid nature of the Stalinist era and Stalin himself ... one can't help but think after seeing this that communism itself was a complete and utter fraud that from its onset meant to basically destroy humanity and that the myth of the new man and the workers paradise was just that, a sugar coated lie used by the party hacks at the top to mislead the masses so they could plunder, torture, murder, and destroy all in the name of the state in a naked pursuit of unbridled and evil 'power'.

For Komrades who like red politics, you can now watch "Battleship Potemkin" and "10 Days that Shook the World" on Youtube.
