Comrades,
I need to find some paint to re-paint a helmet and some hand grenades (F1 and RGD33). Does anyone know of a modern paint that matches the helmet color and hand grenade colors (both the green and mustard yellow-type paint), or do I need to go to a paint store and do the color match thing?
Thanks,
Dave Hruska

I was informed by my fearless unit commander that Testor's "Medium Green" in the spray can works great for helmets. I took his advice and my helmet came out nicely. It is inexpensive also. I cannot help you on the grenade paint. Hope this helps.

Thanks, Dave Hruska Dave, For the green, go to the local plastic model hobby shop and get Testors Model Master Flat Medium Green. It's in small spray cans and matchs dead on. I buy my hobby shop out of it regularly. I have not experimented with the mustard colour, as I have not seen any original items painted this colour. They might have been done and I haven't just seen it. Until I do, I don't bother with it. I have been experimenting more along the lines of a shade darker green. This variation I am seeing from time to time. Especially on a M36 helmet I stripped. This variation is a tad darker than the medium green, and I am keeping at it until I find one that looks good. Dima of course paints large objects like ammo boxes and what not. So he had a local paint shop match the colour on a helmet he took in. That way he can get it by the gallon. Hope that helps. -dave 416th

Comrades,
Maybe the Mustard color was more for Central Asia or Far East helmets & gear? Just a thought...I seem to remember a mustard/tan helmet somewhere on the web that was connected to Khalkin Gol I think.

Comrades, Thanks for the help so far. I bought some of the Testor's Medium Green and it looks like my original helmet, minus the 60+ years of age, of course! The mustard color is not for a helmet, but for the RGD-33 grenade. The three originals I have seen are all painted a sort of mustard yellow color. Here is an example: www.inert-ord.net/russ02i/rgd33/index.htmlAny ideas? Thanks, Dave

Tovarisch Dave,
Like Konstantin said I went to my local Sherwin Williams and had them match my helmet and it looks real good.
However, if you do not have something that they can match then you are in a pickle.
You might try to find someone who has one of the grenades(or another item of the same color) and see if they can get to a paint store and have it scanned for the color and then have them send the formula to you.
Other than that I am out of ideas for the mustard color.
Sincerely,
Dima

Tovarisch Dima,
Thank you for the reply. I just wanted to see if someone had solved this problem before I took one in to the paint store. I will have them scan my buddy's grenade and go from there.
Thanks again for all of your help.
Dave

Dima,
Would it be possible for you to share the mix formula for the medium green? I'd love to get a gallon or so of that.

Tovarisch Glen,
My apologies for missing your post. I will dig around my piles of paper to find the mix formula for the green I use on my boxes and mortars etc.
Sincerely,
Dima (ones who loses track of time)

Perhaps his new exile in Siberia, counting trees, could induce the great Dima to see if the elusive paint formula is still in his dacha.... GK

Tovarisch Glen, My deepest apologies. I was a bit distracted by recent events. I should have kept more focused on the tasks at hand. My bad. I went out to the dungeon to get the paint can to copy down the formula. Unfortuantely blobs of paint have fallen on to the label with the formula on it. So I could not read all of it. What I could read was as follows: ??Colorant...........oz........32........64........128 G2 New Green........4.........40.........-...........1 R2 Maroon..............-..........47.........-...........- ?? Deep Gold...........4.........40.........1..........- ??..........-..........24..........-.........- Do not worry. I have a back up plan. I have a copy of the receipt with the formula at work in my desk and will post the complete formula tomorrow after I get the copy out of my desk. Again my deepest apologies for the tardiness on my part. Sincerely, Dima (the alpha and omega)

Tovarischi,
Ok, I found my receipt at work and here is the formula I use which was matched from one of my helmets.
This formula is as per the Sherwin Williams receipt.
BAC Blend-a-Color ......OZ........32........64........128 G2 new Green ............4...........40.......-............-.... R2 Maroon ................-............47........-............-..... Y3 Deep Gold ............4.............40........1...........-..... Y1 Yellow ................-..............24........-...........-......
Good luck.
Again sorry for the delays.
Sincerely,
Dima (the alpha and the omega)
