Tovarischi,
Something to take into consideration when dealing with original leather items is the effect time and the elements have on them.
This I have learned from studying leather items from the 1700's up through the early 1900's. Heck, this is even evident on a pair of modern work boots bought today and how they look next year or the year after.
Is your goal to have a leather item as it would have looked new at the time of use in 1942 or how it looks 60 years later? New or old? Personally I try for the new look as opposed to the 60 year old look. I hope others would too.
The appearance(color and finish) when they were new, can be and is most often much different than the appearance years later.
This of course being a result of the level of use(or abuse) and exposure to the elements. Different oils, dyes and treatments react differently to use(or abuse) and the elements.
Thus trying to take a 60 year old pouch and compare its finish and color to a repop may not be the most accurate way to determine correctness of the color and finish of a repop.
Other aspects such as construction techniques and materials used tend to be far less susceptible to Father time and Mother nature.
Hopefully as time passes somebody will get a hold of the information regarding which factories were making such materials and what manufacturing standards(materials, finishes, construction techniques) were to be observed at that time. Then we can compare them to originals to see what really took place.
Until then we have a lot of speculating to deal with.
Knowledge is power.
Sincerely,
Dima
